What is a strainer and what usage it has?

It is a type of connection that use for purification, filtering or separating liquids from any solids passes through them.

Anything used to purify a liquid; any device can act as a strainer or filter to prevent solids from mixing in a liquid stream or flow line called strainer.

Strainers trap pipeline deposits such as scale and rust, bind alloy and weld metal in the pipeline, protect equipment and processes from their harmful effects, and thus reduce down time and maintenance.

Usage of strainers:

One of the most used parts in pipeline systems is strainer installation in pipeline especially, their use is more in petrochemical and oil and gas industries. this strainer model includes two types of y-shape and t-shape or basket strainers.

The reason for this naming is their similarity to English letters. According to the application, a specific body type is used, for this purpose, system with high temperature and fluid pressure use stainless steel or FRP body, and in systems with low temperature and fluid pressure use the cast iron body for it.

Based on the shape of the body, strainers can be divided into two main types: y-shape strainer: this typed strainer is mostly used in liquid and gas piping systems and for pipes with diameter of less than 4 inches, which has a low capacity to hold mud and sediment than the t-shape strainer. Therefor the interval between cleaning and descaling of this strainer should be shorter, and it is also better to use the system pressure method for T-shape cleaning.

The method of cleaning the strainer is very easy and there is no need to completely open the strainer from the flange, but it is enough for remove the net over, remove the net and take the necessary steps to clean it.

How to place Y-shape strainer:

In piping system, it should be said that this strainer has the ability to be placed in both horizontal and vertical positions. The important point regarding the installation of this type is the importance of placing the mesh basket at the lowest part so that it can collect all the sediments at the end.

If this strainer is used in gas pipelines, it must be installed horizontally to prevent accumulation of liquids, so prevent the basket from corrosion.

T-shape or basket strainer this type of strainer is used for pipes with diameter greater than 4 inches, so it is larger than Y-shape strainer in size. The larger size of this strainer increases the possibility of pressure drop, so it is better to use T- shape strainer in pipelines for transferring liquids.

The main advantages of this type of strainer, which is also known as a basket strainer, is the possibility of collecting and keeping more sediments, which makes the interval between cleaning and net replacement longer. Also, it is very easy to inspect this part for control of replacement, and by removing its cover, it is possible to access the net.

Basket strainers can only be installed in horizontal pipelines and for larger and heavier basket strainers, the strainer base must e supported. Taban composite Koosha company is ready to provide all kinds of design and manufacturing services of FRP strainers to our respectful customers. When the process has a corrosive fluid or when the strainers are exposed to corrosive conditions due to the environmental conditions of the process, the use of FRP or composite strainers is recommended due due to the special strength of this material against corrosion and also their lower weight compared to metal strainers. It is very affordable. Taban composite Koosha company is a producer of T-shape and Y-shape strainers made of FRP, GRVE.

Reasons and necessities of using composite strainer:

One of the important and constant concerns of key industries is corrosion and fatigue, which can cause a lot of damage to industries. It is important that the amount of indirect damages caused by corrosion can be much higher than its direct effects.

Especially when they are toxic and dangerous materials in the system, it is necessary to introduce and present new engineered materials as an alternative to metals for various industries. Currently, many corrosion engineers suggest the use of GRP products as the best effective solution to combat metal corrosion. For more than 50 years, GRP composites have been used to solve corrosion problems. This application is the result of the extra ordinary performance of GRP in comparison with other similar materials in different applications. according to the above explanations, it was found that the use of composite products in industries is essential, in this regard, it is obvious that many products, including all types of fittings, pipes, tanks, etc can be produced and provided to industries.

Preventing the loss of raw materials used in acid washing units and similar processes, in addition to the occurrence of corrosion problem is one of the important concerns of employers in this field, because the purchase and replacement of acid or contaminated chemicals process systems, in addition to environmental damage, it imposes a lot of economic pressure on them. Purification of contaminated chemicals and acids and returning them to the system is used as a conventional and economical method in industries and factories.

In this method, strainers are the main part of the fluid purification system. Strainers are responsible for separating impurities and solid in contaminated chemicals. the use of conventional materials such as metal, stainless steel, polyethylene, etc create many problems such as short life span, rapid corrosion, lack of mechanical strength in thermoplastic materials and etc.

Therefore, enterprise company Taban composite Koosha is determined to solve most of these problems by designing and producing all kinds of FRP strainers. In this regard, by presenting a comprehensive plan to the science and technology park of Fars province in august 2021, TCK succeeded obtaining an acceptance permit from that respected organization and exclusively engaged in the design and production of this strainers. In this section, we briefly explain the different parts of the strainers produced by TCK company and their production method. From other side of production methods, strainers are combined products that will be produced from two methods, Filament winding and hand lay up which will be presented below in the supplementary explanations in the field of production:

Production of main body of strainers: this part of device is produced by the FW method, in this way, first based on the diameter of the drawing, the required cylindrical mold is selected, and it is closed on the filament winding machine, which was designed and build by the engineers of Taban composite Koosha company, and the main body of the product is the Filament winding method will be produced based on the designed thickness. It should be noted that due to the lack of a specific standard in the field of producing composite strainers, all these orders are designed by the experts of Taban composite Koosha company using the finite element method.

Connection production:

All strainers have connections to connect to the piping system, these connections are generally flanged. The flanges have different drilling standards based on the original design of the employer, and the drilling parameters of the flanges must be carefully checked and the sizes respected in order to successfully connect to other pipeline flanges on the site.

Therefore, before making the flange, the necessary interaction in this field should be done by the design department with the client and the required technical information should be obtained. After obtaining the necessary information, the flanges are produced by manual layering, in this way, based on the size of the flange, the required pipe is first selected, and then it will be produced by manual layering based on the designed arrangement.

Basket production

This part of the device will be produced by manual layering, in this way, based on the size of the main body of the strainer, the dimension of the basket is designed and made by hand layup. After the completion of the production process, the basket is sent to the machine to unit for drilling, and the required drilling is applied on it based on the drawing map.

Vent construction:

All strainers used in industries have an important part called vent.

Vent or air discharge Nozzle is responsible for guiding the air in the strainer in order to prevent the internal pressure of the strainer from increasing. Vent size selection is designed based on the volume of fluid input strainer. If the vent is blocked for any reason or its size is smaller than the standard size, the internal pressure of the strainer increases and causes leakage in the strainer.

The air outlet pipes are produced by Filament winding method and installed on the strainer body.

Final assembly:

After the production of different parts, the strainer should be assembled according to the plan. This part of production has particular importance because any mistake in the assembly may lead to failure on installation or lack of efficiency in strainers. The final assembly of strainer is done by hand lay up method and finally assembled product is dimensionally contracted based on the plan. After the final approval, the surface treatment and painting will be done on the product.

Advantages of using composites:

  • High resistance against the destructive phenomenon of corrosion, including chemical, environmental and biological corrosion
  • Good resistance to the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun.
  • The ability to choose raw materials according to the specific conditions of the fluid as a case study.
  • Low specific weight up to 4 times less than steel and 10 times less than concrete as a result of easy and cheap transportation.
  • High environmental safety due to no leakage
  • Electrical and thermal insulation
  • Low maintenance cost
  • Quick and easy installation
  • Economic efficiency due to very high useful life (about 50 years)
